It’s official: Lance rides a fixed gear. His coach used fixed gear training as a tool to get him to be less of a masher and more of a spinner. Naturally, this means you need to get a fixed gear. That is unless you subscribe to the camp that believes that Lance was all hopped up on goofballs when he accomplished all the wonderful things that he did. In which case, you’ll probably want a 60 speed. This is also true if you subscribe to the camp that believes that all fixed gear riders, whether they’re Lance or not, are all hopped up on goofballs. Apparently, fixed gear riders are nothing but a bunch of drug-crazed hipsters and those fixed gears will extract a mighty price if you’re not cool.
Meanwhile, there’s a big of a discussion going on the fixed gear mailing list about the new fixed gear. You know that whole “pink is the new black” thing? Well, it seems the current arguement is that touring and perhaps even randonneuring/audax is the new fixed gear. Now who’s on drugs?!By the way, if you’re curious, the title is a play on “Out of My Mind on Dope and Speed” by Julian Cope, the same guy that brought us the delightfully anti-car masterpiece Autogeddon.
