I am pleased to announce that we are now able to offer the Sturmey Archer S3X three speed fixed gear hub. It is available on any Bike Friday, but the Pocket bikes (not the tikit or the Air bikes) will require removing the chain to fold as all models will come with adjustable vertical dropouts. It is operated by a propietary bar end control, though an old style thumb shifter mount is available. Cogs get down to 12 teeth. Direct drive is the highest gear so calculate gearing from your given cogs and then 2nd will be 75% of that and 3rd is 62.5% of direct. Also possible is the installation of a freewheel on the threaded cassette body but why would you do that?
À la carte, price is $249 for the kit and a tikit with it on would run about $1498.
Is it worth it? Heck yes. I had one before it was stolen and loved it. It seems like an oxymoron but in practice it really extends the possibilities of a fixie. You do have to hesitate, even under the slighest of loads to get it to shift and there is no brifter (like the Versa for Nexus), and there is no disc brake option, but these are minor quibbles. You can now have all the advantages of a fixed gear without sacrificing your knees. That’s a GOOD THING.
Get in touch if you want to order one up.

I knew as soon as I saw the tweet earlier today… I was pretty sure this was. It. Can’t wait to take it for a spin…

You know, I was thinking that BF ought to come up with a new name for the S3X option… as it’s not really only a “one-way” any more… of course, the one that comes to mind probably is a bit risque…

Alan was thinking 3-in-1 but I don’t know that the Holy Trinity pun will be any better received. I had thought of something else but can’t remember it. I’m open to suggestions.

“menage a trois” (aka, three way) and “xxx” are probably out along with the 3-in-1… at least for polite society…
hat trick… triple play… third shift… third string… three-mile island… triple crown… tri-tip (a beef roast cut) are all classic “three” references… but kind of clash with the “tikit / ticket” naming theme though…
triple a club tikit… a bit of an homage to season tikit (since it, technically) an IGH
many theme parks will let you buy a three-day ticket…
trikit???

Yeah it’s a matter of matching with tikit. Keep trying!

Okay… The one that’s been buggin me (I KNEW a three ticket reference was tickling my head) finally popped in mind… Triple feature ticket… Which of course leaves one free to do a double feature with the sturmey archer s2 or s2c… Not convinced I like it… But at least I can get it out of my brain… It’s been like having a song that you can’t exactly remember playing in your head… Very distracting…

For the curious, the gear inches as is work out to be about 66-21. That top gear is like a 53/21 on a 700c. Though we’re waiting on the 11 to officially release this bike, if that gearing works out for you, we can produce a bike as you see it (with the 8) right away. Call me if you’re confused!
