I can’t say we’re ready to sell these yet, but we’re close: the long anticipated belt drive tikit. Using the Gates Carbon Belt Drive leaves us a bit limited on gearing so we are inclined to wait until later in the year when the Shimano Alfine 11 speed hub comes out before release.
So the one you’ll see in and around the Gates booth (thanks, Jeff Linder, for delivering it!) at Interbike (now you’re going, right?) has a normal old 8 speed Alfine. I would still buy it, though. There aren’t going to be any road races on it, but it was a usable flatland gear on the high end. So plenty of low
Another stumbling block for us on the belt drive is how stiff to make the frame so that flex doesn’t result in belt slippage. So we increased the chainstays from 1/2″ to 5/8″ and brought the chainstay bridge closer to the rear wheel for better triangulation. If anything, it’s overbuilt.

Other interesting frame features include some ideas that Rob English has been kicking around. One is the lack of a clip brace (between the rear end and the back of the main frame). Another is the integration of the stand into the seatmast latch. Both of these are for simplicity’s sake, but the former one makes for better function and easier repair of the rear end latch: a clamp on pin. There is also something going on with the latch pins to simplify things, too, which will provide more clearance.

Then there is the cool split seatstay Rob came up with to deal with split seat stays. Because, as I told Juan Díaz Díaz, a regular on the Bike Friday IRC channel, elevated chainstays are so late 80s

Did I mention these bars? I think I found the first flat bars I like. I am stoked about that! They are Civia Colfax 25° bend multiposition bars. All the clearance and compatibility of a flat bar but so much more wrist friendly.
And am I stoked about the bike! I, for one, plan on pushing hard to release it with the 8 speed. All of us were surprised that the gearing really wasn’t that bad after all. But if you want to be on the list for the official release, get in touch.
Oh and we’re looking for good names. I like Traffic tikit. In typical Bike Friday fashion, it’s a play on words. The Season tikit is a great commuter but this is the übercommuter and in that sense, it really conquers the traffic. What do you think?
UPDATE 15 February 2011: As I’m sure you all know, it’s out now. We opted to give it a relatively lame name, in my opinion, but at least it tells you what it is: Carbon Drive tikit. At the time of writing (yes, I realize this differs from the link above), the 11 speed is $3175 and the 8 speed is $2595. Please note that the use of Phil Wood belt drive cogs allows us to get reasonable gearing with the 8 speed. You also might note the special offer on a Phil Wood hub upgrade..

But the 80′s are back. And a elevated chainstay simplifies maintenance and setup in non workshop environments… and they are different and elegant (yes seriously)
Just one more petition: can you add some pics with the bike folded?
My name suggestion is: Black belt tikit
September 12, 2010 at 7:46 am
I joke about the elevated chainstays. Might be difficult with the wee triangle we have to work with, though.
Folded it is essentially the same as the others except it stands up a lot better.
Is there such thing as a ticket one gets with a black belt? If not, not so punny, but I like where you are going with it.
Oh, Juan, I forgot to tell you: 23#.
September 12, 2010 at 7:15 am
I have to say, I’ve wondered why, especially on town / city, bikes MFRs haven’t at least elevated the driveside chainstay for a belts…
More on topic, though, if you want to really alleviate the the low gearing issue, you could always pair it with a Schlumpf High Speed Drive (2.5:1 gearing increase). There’s a version for high tooth beltring Gates belt drives (I think)…
Talk about the ultimate touring tikit (or “Tikit to travel the world”)… Alfine 11 + Schlumpf High Speed Drive + belt (+ finalize how to get disc brakes on front and rear)… of course, the HS Drive is $500+ street plus whatever mods would have to me made to the tikit to make it fit…
PS – I like the discreet S&S coupler…
September 12, 2010 at 7:39 am
Yeah the Schlumpf is a good idea but way expensive. And you have to permanently ruin (champfer) the bottom bracket shell.
Oh, and it’s not S&S. Rob’s own design. Just two bolts.

[...] Walter posted on his blog about adding a belt drive to a Bike Friday Tikit….looks good. Belt drive and Shimano 11 speed Alfine IGH on a folding bike would be a great setup. I’ll be keeping my eye on it for sure! [...]
September 12, 2010 at 12:02 pm
How about business-class tikit? Since you don’t have to worry about smudging your trousers?
PS – Give Rob my compliments… That’s so clean I had to look a fee times before noticing it.
September 12, 2010 at 1:03 pm
Oh I like that idea. Thanks for thinking!
September 12, 2010 at 1:43 pm
If you can easily use it with a suit, the name can be “suitable tikit”
September 12, 2010 at 1:20 pm
If you’re moving the chainstay bridge, you might double-check to make sure that 40mm Scorchers will still fit on the rear wheel. One irritating feature of Brompton is that it won’t fit 40mm because the bridge is too close.
September 12, 2010 at 1:24 pm
Already thought of checking that when it comes back. Thanks for the reminder.
September 12, 2010 at 2:27 pm
Hot Tikit (because that’s one sweet ride)
Clean Tikit (because it keeps your pants clean)
Round-Trip Tikit (because it will get you there and back in style)
And when the Shimano 11 comes out… I expect to hear how this Tikit goes up to 11!
September 12, 2010 at 5:31 pm
The Round-trip is not a bad idea!
September 12, 2010 at 4:01 pm
How about Beltway Ticket (for the politically minded)?
September 13, 2010 at 12:10 pm
What beltring and cog combo did you use? Looks like a fun ride.
September 13, 2010 at 12:27 pm
60 front, 24 rear I believe.
September 14, 2010 at 12:53 am
a perfect london UK companion to my Trek Soho belt driven bike!
September 14, 2010 at 8:12 am
Great concept on the tikit esp w the Alfine 11. Would you make available a conversion kit for existing tikit owners?
September 14, 2010 at 8:24 am
It’s possible but it would require a new rear end.
September 15, 2010 at 8:26 pm
What kind of timelines do you have in mind for delivery? We already have a date for a travel ticket but………
September 15, 2010 at 9:20 pm
No plans yet. Waiting for the Alfine 11 speed hub…
September 20, 2010 at 3:38 pm
For the belt-drive ticket you could call it the “Split Tikit”.
If the racing triple is called the “Speeding Tikit” then I think you should call a Tikit with absolutely no gears and no brakes whatsoever the “Bleeding Tikit”
October 21, 2010 at 5:00 pm
This thing looks so sweet! This bike if made, will be my first Bike Friday for sure.
October 23, 2010 at 6:02 am
Damn! I want the exact duplicate of this bike. Who needs 11 speeds?
December 3, 2010 at 10:24 am
Did I mention you could get the 8 speed model ordered right away?
November 29, 2010 at 5:38 am
Round trip tikit works nicely and business tikit is going in the right direction… I’d call it
FIRST CLASS TIKIT …. a smooth and luxurious ride. What do you think??? and I want one!
December 3, 2010 at 10:27 am
Drop me an email with your address, email, and phone and I’ll make sure you get one as soon as they’re available!
November 29, 2010 at 5:44 am
FREE TIKIT? because it’s free of derailleurs!
November 29, 2010 at 5:46 am
and I need 11 speeds!
November 29, 2010 at 9:12 pm
Have you seen the new Gates Centertrack System?
http://www.bikerumor.com/2010/09/15/gates-carbon-drive-introduces-new-lighter-centertrack-system/
It looks like a nice upgrade to the current design. I had thought about getting a custom Bike Friday Pocket Llama with the possibility of adding a NuVinci hub and Gates Belt Drive.
December 3, 2010 at 10:23 am
Actually, it’s likely that a NuVinci belt drive version will be out before the Alfine 11, at least given apparent availability.
As for the Centertrack, as far as I know, it’s not in the wild yet, but it’s a great innovation. I’m really excited about it.
December 15, 2010 at 3:54 pm
Belt drive on a folding bike sounds like a great match-up for a commuter application. Belt drive probably will be a no brainer in 5 years or less for the frames that can accommodate it. Looks to me as though CenterTrack is the one to wait for since it will support a smaller rear cog, I believe, which is critical for the small wheels of a folder. And we really don’t need two belt drive standards, do we?
December 1, 2010 at 8:51 pm
Hi Walter,
I like “Seat Belt tikit”.
December 3, 2010 at 10:21 am
sounds too much like a car, man!
January 17, 2011 at 2:07 pm
How about “Beltline Tikit” in honor of Eugene?
February 15, 2011 at 10:01 am
Yeah. About that.
January 29, 2011 at 10:35 am
How about “Golden Tikit?”
February 13, 2011 at 12:18 am
I would really be interested in the Centertrack version when it will arrive. The parts are supposedly floating around but have any found there way to BF?
February 15, 2011 at 9:54 am
Nope, nothing yet. As far as we know, it’s a prototype at this point.
February 16, 2011 at 10:34 am
Do you think that the centertrack system will be a straight swap? I am working on the idea that if the Centertrack cogs/sprockets are a straight swap then I would get a belt drive sooner than wait. It appears that the centertrack system will appear on the Spot Brand Acme bike sometime in May/April timeframe.
February 23, 2011 at 12:07 pm
I just spoke to the Gates rep (in Colorado) about the CenterTrack parts. He told me “spring”. They are trying April but most likely May will be the availablity. He also asked me to call him back when the time gets closer so he could give me a more precise timeframe.
February 27, 2011 at 3:06 pm
I’d get your bike ordered now then as our deliveries are out until April. Get it with a chain drive (cheap) but with the rear end for the belt. That will ensure you don’t have to wait longer.
March 18, 2011 at 8:41 pm
I will order one in late May, early June so that I can have it for the end of August when I return home. Also by then the CenterTrack parts should be sorted out.
I also wrote to Phil Wood about if/when they might be working on sprockets and cogs for the CenterTrack and the customer service rep was absolutely clueless about what I was talking about.
March 19, 2011 at 4:04 pm
I have also come to learn the Phil 22 doesn’t work on the 11. In any case, that CenterTrack business may take some time, so I wouldn’t make any trips. The bike industry often says one thing and does another way later. We usually don’t. There is, however, the etikit…
March 19, 2011 at 5:12 pm
Then, with that news, might it be possible to make the sprocket larger (62 or 64) that way the top ratio would be 89″ or 92″? I know that this will all boil down to the length of the Gates belt.
March 19, 2011 at 5:18 pm
Yes, though you might want to pursue EGGrings from Highpath Engineering as they are like the only option for something that big.
March 19, 2011 at 5:29 pm
I, would have thought, based upon the information on Phil Woods website that given any crank specs (BCD etc.) that they could CNC a sprocket to whatever a desired configuration. I went over to Highpath Engineering and they are no longer taken any new orders.
Rats! I was hoping that 94″ would let me survive in the “bus”. My PR has a 56/11 on it and I run out of RPM’s behind tandem lines.
March 19, 2011 at 5:38 pm
C’est la vie
November 8, 2012 at 4:20 am
Yes! Finally someone writes about web hosting.
January 25, 2013 at 10:42 pm
Thanks for the good writeup. It in reality was a enjoyment account it.
Glance advanced to far added agreeable from you!
However, how could we keep in touch?
