it’s the Season for a new ride!

6 07 2009

Things have been busy here in the Bike Friday showroom!  So busy we’ve actually been selling some of our demo bikes.  Luckily, some of the re-ordered ones are starting to make their way back into the showroom.  Just recently, we finally had our new Season tikit delivered.  I’m really excited about this one because I thought the Season tikit was a really good idea anyways.  However, this one is extra special because it is the very first bike we have ever equipped with a SRAM i-Motion 9 speed internal hub.  The end result is very good.  Shifting is smooth, disconnecting the cable is easy (unlike the Shimano Nexus), the gear range is wider (a standard tikit is 79-31 gear inches, Nexus 88-29, i-Motion 101-30 — make that 81-24; see below) and the price is only $200 more.  Sound too good to believe?  Get in touch and let me know when you’d like to schedule a test ride and you can find out for yourself! :D

I figured so. Isn’t it time for a new bike by the way? :D

Hey Walter, what is the smallest sprocket that will work with the i-motion 9? I am looking forward to achieve a 120+ gear inch in a tikit. Thanks

No smaller than an 18. Cogs are specifics to the hub, BTW. With a 62 tooth chainring, you can get 105-30.8. So that’s probably not going to work. Of course, you could get this with a Dual Drive (60×11-34=122-21.3). A Capreo is darn close at 114-39.3 (with a 62).

Thanks!

Where can I get a 130BCD 62T chainring? Will it rub with the tikit’s chainstay? I am trying to stay away from derailleurs so the DD and Capreo are not an option

We sell ‘em, although you can get even bigger rings from Egg Rings in the UK. The 62 won’t have a problem with the chainstay for sure, though.

Great pics of the new Season Tikit, thanks.

I’m currently deciding between the Nexus and SRAM variants, for urban commuting (hilly here in Wellington) and light touring. To get the 101-30 range you mention, is that what the stock bike gets (i.e. the one listed on the BF site)? Also, would there be a way to drop the range a bit (something like 25-95 or so)?

Finally, now that you’ve lived with the iMotion for a while, any further thoughts about it vs. the Nexus? They both sound good, but that bigger SRAM range is tempting… :)

Dave, I think I messed up. The stock configuration comes with a 20 tooth cog, yielding 80.5-23.7 and the highest cog I know to be available is an 18 giving 89.5-26.3. You could put a 54 on there with the 18 and get 91.2-26.8 or go 56 and get 94.5-27.8. Sorry for the mistake all!

Anyways, nope, bike’s still great. Outside of the fact that the i-Motion is more limited in gears (you can get a brifter and a Tap Fire shifter for the Nexus), I think it’s fab.
